New Anti Bike Rally Ordinances In Myrtle Beach May Not Stand Up In Court

A hearing is scheduled in the 15th District Court of Horry County to hear a motion for a preliminary injunction against the city of Myrtle Beach to stop it from enforcing some of the recently passed anti-bike rally ordinances. This is the first of several suits filed by Myrtle Beach residents and business owners that believe these ordinances to be unjust. Lawyers representing Harley Davidson of Myrtle Beach and other bike related businesses suggest that some of these new laws are illegal.
Fifteen recently passed ordinances specifically target motorcycle riders in an attempt to discourage and permanently disband the two spring time bike rallies in Myrtle Beach. Five ordinances became effective immediately after the vote in September including a noise ordinance that would allow for a maximum of 87 decibels at idle and a helmet law just for Myrtle Beach (SC does not require a helmet for those 21 and over).
If you go a little up the beach to North Myrtle Beach, their Mayor and city council are doing everything they can to ATTRACT motorcycle riders. They have no plans on changing any laws and have made city wide improvements to make riders feel welcome. North Myrtle Beach anticipates their portion of attendance to increase by at least 25% next year.
